By kind permission of the committee of the Leicester Society of Model Engineers, I am hosting the second annual Midlands Minimal Meet at the Abbey Park Railway in Leicester.

The railway is half a mile of ground level 5/7.25" line. Loading is either by an adjustable ramp to raised steaming bays with a cover that restricts the height of rail vehicles to 4ft 8.5ins from rail level, or, at ground level using a level crossing. Apart from the steaming bays, the rest of the line has headroom of at least 6' 3" as I am that tall and can walk around the line without ducking! :) Rails are rectangular steel bar and curves are minimum 60ft radius. The line has automatic three aspect colour light signalling and is a circular circuit. There is also a short branchline which will be operated by a hand-signaller as required if anyone wants to go along it.

The railway will not be open to the public on the day, but it is in a compound within a busy public park so will be a good opportunity to display Minimal Gauge to the general public. There are a number of passenger coaches and three goods wagons available for our use. The coaches have vacuum brakes which can be isolated for use with non-fitted locos.

Access to the railway is from St Margaret's Way (the A6) just north of the city centre. Drive through the pay and display car park beside the Grand Union Canal at LE1 3EA.
