The late Ken Swan

I noticed from Facebook that Ken Swan has sadly passed away. I met him a number of times at 7 1/4 events and he was always very pleasant and a fountain of knowledge. He was of course responsible for the Derwent Valley Railway which was transferred to Beamish and is now run by a group, He designed several 7 1/4 locos Bridget, Jessie, Wren and Koppel being the most prominent

This is indeed sad news. I first met Ken at the AGM at Millerbeck in 1990 when he was displaying his Koppel rack loco. He was always happy to answer questions and help wherever he could. And of course in later years at Beamish on the Society's trip there I rode on the 7¼" gauge rack railway, quite an experience! Ken showed us around the workshop, ever helpful and obliging. Coincidentally I was only thinking of Ken and his rack and pinion Koppel last week when riding on the so-called cog railway up Mount Washington in the USA.
